Toxic behaviours (such as blame, contempt, criticism, defensiveness and stonewalling) and/or the expression of really strong negative emotions can be hard to handle in a coaching relationship. When the toxicity is directed at the coach, the impact may be even greater, leaving us struggling to manage our triggers and vulnerabilities whilst trying to put on a brave face and maintain our composure.

The concept of ‘universal needs’ from Nonviolent Communication offers us a framework for self-empathy and empathy for our clients, so that we remain grounded and able to access our resources.

1. Guided discussion in small groups in which individuals explore what triggers them

2. Exercises in self-empathy and empathy for others, based on reactions to scenarios explored above

3. Reflection on applying insights to own coaching

I am a Chartered Psychologist and work as a relationship coach and mediator. I draw heavily on the ethos, principles and process of Nonviolent Communication and have been a certified trainer of NVC for almost 20 years. I am also trained in Organisational and Relationship System Coaching (ORSC).

I have delivered sessions to Guildford Coaches Group (twice), Sadler Heath in Lewes, an ORSC community evening and Guildford Quakers. I have also run numerous public workshops of varying lengths.
